Periodontitis

Periodontitis should be viewed as infectious diseases where bacteria are the primary etiologic factor of it. Due to insufficient education, poor oral hygiene, food debris, plaque and bacteria are unfortunately still considered the main cause of dental caries and changes of the visible part of the tooth. All of these factors impact the health of the gums and can lead to periodontal disease (GUM DISEASE / PERIODONTITIS). It's easy to overlook the early symptoms, for there is no severe pain or discomfort, so the inflammation progresses silently, the diagnosis is not made in a timely manner and the disease reaches the point where irreversible changes occur.

Signs and symptoms of periodontitis can include:

Health assessment is of great importance, so it is the first step before starting systematic periodontitis treatment. Taking a past medical history tells your doctor what health issues you may be at risk for when you undergo periodontal therapy or is there something that may affect therapy outcome.

  • Bleeding
  • Swollen or puffy gums
  • Bright red, dusky red or purplish gums
  • Gums that pull away from your teeth (recede)
  • Loose teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste in your mouth

Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy

The aim of initial periodontal therapy is to remove pathogenic microorganisms and their byproducts (e.g. calculus) from around affected teeth, in order to halt progression of disease. Gingivitis (soft tissue inflammation) and periodontitis (inflammation that causes the destruction of the tooth-supporting apparatus) are usually caused by bacterial germs, so the patient needs to undergo supression treatment. The procedure is performed with both manual instruments (so-called curettes) and sonic and ultrasonic scalers. Depending on the degree of progression, treatment is performed in multiple visits. Professional methods of dental plaque and tartar deposits removal are surface cleansing and deep cleansing of your teeth in and below the gum line. The procedure is completely painless, because mechanical cleaning beneath the gum line is performed under local anesthesia.
